The 'Great God' Debate

With great anticipation I listened to the 'Great God' debate on Hugh Hewitt's show. Being biased (toward the pro-God and His evident greatness) going in I was anxious to hear Roberts combat...errr...debate Hitchens down. Sadly I felt Roberts acquiesced too often to Hitchens' points.

I thought perhaps my perception of this debate was off, so I called my Dad. He too is an avid Hewitt fan and I knew he'd be listening to the much promoted debate. Dad agreed with me that we both left the program wanting so much more from Roberts. We plan on sitting down with the podcast and listen together, with our own "live" commentary.

By no means do I think my understanding of the Scriptures competes with the brilliance of Mark Roberts. But I feel his lack of debating skills or at least desire lost out. I felt more often like he was trying to witness to Hitchens over a cup of coffee, instead of debating the truth and evidence of God.

Talking with friends at church this past Sunday, I found at least one who loved the way Roberts handled himself. My friend Paul stressed that "Mark came with such a different spirit", to which I agree but felt he could still debate in Christ's love and yet give some force behind his statements.

I guess it could have been worse, this could have been another debate with Kirk Cameron playing intellectual for the pro-God side (and failing miserably).

 What are your opinions?
